LADIES choir Bel Canto will be in the pink for charity when it stages its first concert on Saturday. Raising money for the Pink Ladies breast cancer support group, An Audience with Bel Canto will feature a range of songs by the Eisteddfodwinning choir, as well as guest appearances from a number of local musicians.

Mezzo-soprano Jenny Hayes and guitarist John Byrne are just two of the guests who will be providing accompaniment to some of the choir’s numbers.

Although the group is a regular fixture on the local music scene, often singing at events, weddings and even on BBC’s Songs of Praise, this will be the first time Bel Canto has staged its own concert.

It has had help from sponsors De Putron Fund Management (Guernsey) Ltd and Butterfield Bank.

The evening will feature numbers in the styles of gospel, folk and pop

as well as Spanish traditional pieces.

Lead by conductor Christine Anthony MBE, the 20-strong choir has been together since 2002 and has gained a strong reputation locally.

‘We thought it was time that we staged our very own concert,’ said Mrs Anthony. ‘During our six years together we have sung in a number of concerts for other musical groups on the island and for many church events, which we have really enjoyed. The girls have been working very hard on the pieces for our concert and we have a real mix of styles that will appeal to a wide audience.’
