Head is tickled pink by keenness

STUDENTS from St Andrew’s School will be donning pink clothes and tiaras for this year’s Pink Ladies Sunset Coastal Walk. Head teacher Linda Paley had hoped to get 10 students from the school involved – one for each year the Pink Ladies has been going. Instead lots of students have come forward, far exceeding her expectations.

The cause is close to Ms Paley’s heart as she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, which is now in remission.

‘The whole school’s ethos is be involved with the community, especially charity events,’ she said. ‘The girls have all been very involved and excited.’

She took part in the last walk, and said the ‘flotilla of ladies’ dressed in pink walking along the coast for the cause was heart-warming.

The students have learned about cancer in their PSHE classes.

Year 6 student Eloise Le Page, 11, will be doing the walk with her mum, aunt and friends. She felt the Pink Ladies was a good cause to support.

‘We have learnt about how upsetting it can be for families and those who are ill, because not all of them survive.’

Stephanie Robert, 10, decided to do the walk after her friend Eloise made the suggestion.

‘I am looking forward to it,’ she said.

‘I’m doing the full walk but it should be fun. The walk is about helping people get better and live better.’

Traditionally, walkers dress up in pink for the event, but this year there will also be a prize for the best-dressed little princesses, who will be picked out at the two start points of the event by Miss Guernsey Lisa Knott. Princess entrants must be under 12.

The walk takes place on Saturday 18 June. One route starts at 6pm at Grandes Rocques and is 10.5 miles long. The shorter is around 3.5 miles and starts at Bordeaux at 8pm. Walkers then gather at Market Square for a party.
Entry forms are available from Guernsey Press reception, several local shops and are downloadable from www.thisisguernsey.com.
