Walk On

AS THE Pink Ladies celebrate their 10th anniversary, this year’s Sunset Coastal Walk looks set to be bigger and better than ever. On Saturday 18 June, thousands of women are expected to walk the 10.5-mile route for charity.

THE Pink Ladies Sunset Coastal Walk is back.

The popular event, which encourages the island’s women to don pink and walk along the coast from Grandes Rocques to Town, takes place on 18 June.
It was launched in 2007 and attracted more than 2,000 walkers, raising £100,000.

This year’s event is particularly important as the charity celebrates its 10th anniversary.

‘It is a good event to get involved in as most ladies can think of people they know who have been touched by breast cancer,’ said walk organiser Doreen Le Poidevin.

‘The event is all about local women.

‘Due to generous sponsorship and the help of numerous volunteers, virtually every penny raised is used by the Pink Ladies with no admin costs, so it is important to take part to support breast cancer patients and their families and proceeds from the walk this year will once again be of benefit to local ladies.’

The walk starts at 6pm, is approximately 10.5 miles long and finishes with a party in Market Square. All ages are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult.

A second walk, which joins up with the other one, starts from Bordeaux at 8pm and is 3.5 miles long.

‘The atmosphere is buzzing on the night and the sight of so many women walking as a sea of pink moving along the coastline is very emotional and makes all of the hard work by everyone worthwhile,’ she said.

‘It is very uplifting to see so many women supporting each other.
‘The Sunset Walk is different to other walks as it not only helps to raise awareness of breast cancer but it shows how many women come together to support our charity. They also enjoy the fun and party atmosphere.’

Mrs Le Poidevin said they have received many positive comments from women from previous years wanting to know when the next one would be.
She hoped more people would participate in 2011.

‘We would say “the more the merrier” to join us on the night and pairs, teams and families are all welcome,’ she said.
