Doing something sweet for charity

THE Guernsey Press raised two thousand pounds for breast cancer charities as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month. On 29 October a cake sale was held, with all the proceeds going to charity. There was also a raffle and an auction, with every penny collected being split between Breast Cancer Care and the Pink Ladies. Contributions from advertisers were also passed on.

The event was organised by Sara King, who works in the Guernsey Press telesales department, with help from receptionist Pat Jeffreys and staff Michele Hockey, Natalie Oxley and Stacey Ferbrache.

'A cake sale was a simple way to raise money and raise awareness,' said Mrs Hockey.

'I think with breast cancer, it is so close to home with women in general. It was a great team builder as we all pulled together.'

Staff rallied round and baked cakes and savoury goods for the sale, which was open to the public. Warrys also donated 100 fairy cakes, complete with pink ribbons, and Sueco created 10 exquisite cakes with pink glitter.

'With our advertising through the Press and Globe, we had a really good response from the public,' she said.

'With the amount we raised, we did exceptionally well. We made nearly 300 just from the cakes.'

Clients were encouraged to advertise as part of a special breast cancer awareness Globe.

'Some of our clients offered us prizes to help us raise money,' said Sara King.
'We had about 80 prizes. The generosity of our advertising clients was overwhelming.

'Some of them gave exceptionally high-value gifts, which we felt were best used in the auction.'

Nearly 700-worth of raffle tickets were sold and 400 was made on the auction.

Mrs Jeffreys also sold pink Breast Cancer Care T-shirts on the day.

'We were very pleased with the response,' said Miss King.

'It was a great team-building experience. The whole place had a real buzz about it.'

The team thanked all their clients for their donations for the occasion and everyone who bought cakes.

Guernsey Press staff went pink for the day on 29 October, holding a cake sale, raffle and auction in aid of breast cancer charities.
