Pink Ladies walk back in June

A RIBBON of colour will once again appear along the island’s coastline this summer as the Pink Ladies’ Sunset Coastal Walk returns.

The charity event takes place on Saturday 24 June to raise money and awareness for the local breast cancer support group, which was set up in 2001 by local women who had undergone treatment for the illness to help other sufferers.

Around 2,000 walkers have donned wigs and bright pink clothes for the biennial event since 2007.

The Pink Ladies hope women will turn out in force for the June event.

The group’s facilitator, Karen Leach, said: ‘For our biennial awareness event, our fundraising target is £70,000. ‘This will allow us to support the breast care unit in the replacement of the mammography equipment.

‘The breast team have identified some new mammography equipment which has increased capability.

‘Using a new technology called tomosynthesis will improve cancer detection rates and stop a number of women having to go to the UK for specialist breast imaging.’

Pink Ladies co-founder Doreen Le Poidevin said it was the support group’s sixth sunset walk.

‘It’s such a fantastic atmosphere and great to see individuals and groups all sharing in such a positive experience.’

The walk will finish with a party in Market Square. An Abba tribute band will be playing and Symposium will provide food and drink for walkers and their families and friends.

There are two routes again. The first starts at Grandes Rocques car park at 6pm and is 10.5 miles long.

The second is roughly 3.5 miles and starts at Bordeaux at 8pm, with participants being joined by those from the other start point before going on to the finish line.

All ages are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration forms will be available in shops and on the Pink Ladies’ website next month. For information, visit or call 07781 415131.
