Guy’s and St Thomas’s-trained practitioner the new breast surgeon at Medical Specialist Group

A NEW breast surgeon consultant has joined the Medical Specialist Group. Tom Fysh, 36, was born in London and grew up in southwest England. He chose to go into medicine partly because his grandfather was a GP.

‘My dad always wished he had done it and so he encouraged me and my teachers encouraged me,’ he said.

He studied medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’s in London and was trained in general and emergency surgery, but decided to specialise in reconstructive and oncoplastic breast surgery.

He said it was his teacher’s enthusiasm that persuaded him into breast surgery and

also the fact that the work was really appreciated.

‘Surgery can be high intensity for low reward, but with breast surgery you can see the results for years and years,’ he said.

He completed his surgical training in various hospitals in the UK and then undertook an oncoplastic breast surgery fellowship in Sydney, Australia, for a year.

‘While Australia was great fun, it never really felt like home and it was a long way from family,’ he said.

So when the job came up in Guernsey he was quick to apply. His wife has a number of friends in the island and that helped encourage them to come over.

He started his new job in August and has already been hard at work.

In the past, major skin cancer surgeries were done in the UK, but now more of them can be completed locally, thanks to this appointment.

Mr Fysh is married with three children and in his spare time enjoys swimming, kayaking, travel and cooking.

He said the family was adjusting well. ‘We’ve had a fantastic time,’ he said. ‘We’ve been on the beach, but we’ve also had a lot of settling in to do.’
