The Help to Overcome Problems Effectively Programme

10/07/2011

Macmillan Cancer Support and the Health and Social Services Department are offering a free programme of help for people living with cancer or caring for someone with cancer. The programme is offered over seven weeks for two and a half hours per session.

The Help to Overcome Problems Effectively (H.O.P.E.) programme is a health and lifestyle coaching course delivered by trained leaders that gives the opportunity to learn and share with people who are also living with cancer.

Topic areas may include relaxation skills, physical activity, healthy eating, how to increase confidence and self- esteem, dealing with stress, guilt and fatigue.  It covers these topics by building on participants existing strengths through skills practice, setting goals and addressing barriers.

This is a highly flexible course and the content can be varied to suit the needs of each group.  The first session is a taster session where participants meet and decide the final course content, day and time for following sessions.

The first Guernsey course is due to start during the week commencing 24th October 2011 and participants will finish during the week commencing the 5th December 2011. Anyone who would like more information and/or is interested in taking up the opportunity to experience this course can contact Di Mathews at the Health Promotion Unit on 707311 or by e-mail at dmathews@hssd.gov.gg giving your name, contact information and preferred day and time for sessions.
