Free training for Race for Life participants

RACE FOR LIFE returns on Sunday 17 May and participants now have the chance to train for the 5km run with athletics star Lee Merrien.

The free weekly training sessions will be on every Wednesday evening at 6.15pm, starting from 1 April.

The sessions will be led by both Mr Merrien and personal trainer Andy Perkins.

They will be offering the session as part of their health and fitness service, Healthcheck.

'We have a weekly women's training on a Wednesday evening already,' siad the Great Britain runner.

'However, with Race for Life coming up, we thought it woulkd be nice to combine the two together, to help people entering prepare for the race, as well as helping raise awareness and Cancer Research.'

The sessions are open to all women and are structured to suit all levels of ability from experienced runners to those new to running.

And while sessions are free, Lee and Andy are assking that those taking part make a donation to Cancer Research for each session they attend.

'Obviously, we want to raise as much money as possible for this cause,' said Mr Merrien.

'This is also a way to say thank you to a great charity.'

Both Lee and Andy are hoping that the session will also help make people aware of the training sessions they provide.

'We initially started the Wednesday evening sessions for women to increase the participation in female athletics on the island', he said.

'We now have 15-25 people who take part in our sessions.'
